News? Some new categories ... so take your camera and shoot!
1. Category Birds of Wallonia:
This category celebrates the Year of Biodiversity and the publication of the Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Belgium, produced by the ornithologists of AVES asbl and the Walloon Region. Photographs submitted under this category should show a species of bird which nests or which is known to have nested in Wallonia, or a species which migrates through or winters regularly in Wallonia. Migratory or wintering species that occur here only occasionally are not eligible. Photographers submitting in this category must certify on their honour and in writing that each photograph was taken in Wallonia. (It has been decided that lists of species eligible under this category will not be published. This is in order to promote knowledge of birdlife in general and to promote information on the birdlife of Wallonia in particular). In no case will the rarity of the species be a priority concern of the jury.
2. Category Portrait :
The photograph must show the species in its most representative plumage. Its most important characteristics (plumage, shape, and behaviour ...) should be clearly illustrated. The subject should occupy most of the image space.
3. Category Action :
The photograph will be more than just an illustration of behavior, it will catch one or more birds in action. The evident vitality and energy of the photograph will be an asset.
4. Category Light and atmosphere:
The photograph shows the bird in special conditions of lighting or atmosphere. The lighting and the atmosphere ("ambiance") must transport the viewer "to the centre of the scene photographed" and make her of him share the emotions of the moment.
5. Category Animal Landscape:
If the bird is the major subject of the photograph, most of the photograph is taken up with the environment, the habitat or the landscape. This is clearly a photograph of a bird that is integrated in the landscape.
6. Category Graphics:
The photograph catches the viewer's attention by its graphic content, whether emphasized or highlighted. This graphic content may be the colour, the overall composition or the form of the subjects photographed.
7. Category Unusua :
The photograph shows the bird in an unusual position, either in terms of its position, its chosen perch, its location, its environment or its interaction with humans or other animals. The intention is to go beyond the former category "originality".
8. Category Mini Series:
The photographer should submit 5 photographs having in common either a species, an attitude, a colour, an atmosphere, .... Photographs should be all portrait or all landscape format (only one mini serie by participant).
9. Category Youth (birth date subsequent to October 18, 1995):
This class covers any animal (not only birds) photographed in the wild.
