Article summary

This article analyses the data on point indices of abundance collected in the Brussels Region between 1992 and 2005 in the framework of a program of surveillance of the state of the Brussels' environment. Of 36 species studied (Table 1), 12 are increasing, 10 declining, and 8 stable; the remaining 6 show no discernible trend (Table 2). The results indicate that there is a large proportion of hole nesters among the most common species, as well as a good state of health of this group of species. On the other hand, the ground nesters and the migratory species may be at a disadvantage at the level of the Region. Distinctions appear also as a function of the diet, notably an unfavourable trend for the seed-eaters. As well, the urban areas seem to suffer from a reduction in the potential to accomodate nesting birds. The general evolution of Brussels' birdlife tends towards an increase of the large opportunist species and a decline of species having greater ecological demands, in particular in terms of habitat.
