Article summary

Although the Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus) does not nest at the dams of the Eau d'Heure in the southwest of the Walloon Region, it has been found there in large numbers most of the year. Thanks to the rings observed in the autumn of 2006 and the spring of 2007, we were able formally to identify two individuals among these as being of the Scandinavian subspecies (Larus fuscus fuscus) which nests in the northeast of Europe. This discovery led us to formulate the hypothesis that these birds are here at the extreme western edge of their known migration corridor which is oriented from the Baltic Sea to southeastern Europe. We have taken this opportunity to present a brief summary of the taxonomic position and status of the Lesser Black-backed Gull. As well, a series of pictures is used to illustrate the difficulties in identifying in the field the various subspecies.
