Article summary

We discuss various criteria to determine the age and sex of Kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) when in the hand. An adult male can immediately be recognised. A young male generally is no problem as long as at least one feather on the mantle has moulted. For females, age is often difficult to determine. A first year bird generally has mantle, back, and wing coverts of two generations; often as well, a clear border is visible at the tip of the primary coverts.
