Article summary

There is a substantial scientific literature on the impact of climate change on birds of temperate zones, leading to changes in the timing of migration, in demographic parameters and in location of wintering and breeding areas. Ornithological data from Wallonia have been= analysed in order to determine to what extent changes observed at European level can be observed in our region. The results show earlier spring migrations (the extent of advancement varying between species), a positive effect of mild winters on resident species and on which migrate over short distances, and a tendency of communities to move northwards. For our region, observed changes pose only a minor threat, compared to those posed by man-made habitat change, which is particularly intense in Wallonia. But the complexity of the underlying mechanisms, the uncertainty regarding the magnitude of future changes and the difficulty in understanding possible lags and interactions with other factors, mean that great caution is called for when predicting future developments.
