Article summary

A new European breeding bird atlas (EBBA2) is currently promoted by the European Bird Census Council. The main fieldwork period is planned for 2013 to 2017. The basic methodological approach of EBBA2 requires gathering as much information as possible for every 50×50 km square in order to produce maps that show (i) breeding evidence, (ii) abundance and (iii) distribution change with respect to the first atlas.A second approach will be established in order to collect standardized data and to use this information to generate modelled fine-grained 10x10 km maps for common species. Many sources could potentially provide data for the project and defining simple and common protocols is crucial in the very heterogeneous European context. In the case of Wallonia and Brussels, data may come from a number of data sources, and the projects promoted by Aves-Natagora can perfectly fit the needs of the European project. Therefore, over the next three breeding seasons it is particularly important to participate to the 1 km² sampling exercise, keep the SOCWAL and SOCBRU up and report atlas codes in the portal Observations.be. This continent-wide project needs a strong collaboration between very diverse countries and poses particular challenges in east and southeast Europe. EBBA2 urgently needs birdwatchers to help with data collection in these countries.
