The Lothar hurricane and the breeding forest avifauna. III. Study of the impact of a reasoned reconstitution of a forest plot after the storm
This study, undertaken during spring 2003, deals with a forest plot of 18,9 ha in the Northern Vosges during the course of its reconstitution. Three quarters of its surface were destroyed, first by a storm of an outstanding violence on June 2, 1999, then by the Lothar hurricane on December 26 of the same year. The reconstitution of the forest after these two disturbances was "exemplary": maintenance of existing elements (isolated trees, clusters of old wood and thickets areas), but also of dead trees, broken trunk and overthrown wood stumps, search for a diversity of species and structures and planting of young oaks in complement to natural regeneration... Beginning of year 2003, the forest plot looks like a varied forest milieu with large and medium sized woods and young trees, closed zones, clearings, edges, and a mixture of deciduous (especially oaks) and coniferous trees (spruces and Scot pines). Many dead trees (more than 80 old pines or oaks!) were left standing, as well as tens of broken trunks, overthrown stumps, heaps of branches... The census of the breeding avifauna was carried out by plotting of the territories. The highest number of species observed in spring 2003 is 48. The density was determined for 36 of them (the others are species with large territories or wandering birds, not confined to the forest plot). These 36 species add up to 147,5 pairs on the 18,9 ha surface, or 77,9 pairs on 10 ha. The bird population is very varied, with birds of old forests, thickets and open zones. These results are compared with those of other studies carried out by territory plotting in the forests of the Northern Vosges and it appears that the avian population of this plot, strongly lacking "large wood", is quite remarkable.
