Article summary

Two coordinated counts of communal night roosts of Great Cormorant are organised every winter in Wallonia and Brussels (mid-November and mid-January). There were 3262 cormorants counted in November and 3475 individuals in January. The presented results also suggest that numbers of wintering Cormorants in Southern Belgium are now globally stable, but can be subject to fluctuation probably related to weather situation in the study area and around. A severe drop in number in the lower course of the Meuse River is also observed, which may be related to change in river ecosystem induced by the recent invasion of an alien mussel.
