Article summary

In 1985 the Red-backed Shrike was "the Bird of the year" in Germany : it was then in serious decline all over the country. In the beginning of the nineties a new census was organized in the whole (reunified) Germany : the population had increased significantly and reached 71000-80000 pairs. It still increased since then and should now reach more than 150.000 breeding pairs. The explanation for such an increase is to be found in the growing interest for ornithology and especially for the Red-backed Shrike "bird of the year" in 1985 : an important effort was made to protect the hedges and to plant new ones. Moreover the destruction of hedges nearly stopped in agricultural landscape reorganisation. Warm and favourable summers also helped to good breeding results. In the future the conservation measures for the Red-backed Shrike should also take the migration routes and the wintering sites into account.
