Article summary

This combined report of both Belgian rarities committees, CH and BAHC, deals with rare birds recorded in Belgium during 1996 and 1997, as well as with some earlier records that had not been published yet. Major rarities in 1996-1997 included the 1st Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis), Least Sandpiper (Calidris minutilla), Calandra Lark (Melanocorypha calandra), Marmora's Warbler (Sylvia sarda) and Iberian Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus brehmii), 2nd White-rumped Sandpiper (Calidris fuscicollis), dowitcher (Limnodromus sp.), Black-eared Wheatear s.l. (Oenanthe hispanica / melanoleuca), Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler (Locustella certhiola) and Yellow-browed Bunting (Emberiza aureola), 2nd and 3rd Citrine Wagtail (Motacilla citreola) and Arctic Warbler (Phylloscopus borealis), 3rd Black-headed Wagtail (Motacilla feldegg), Desert Wheatear (Oenanthe deserti) and North-western Redpoll (Carduelis flammea rostrata), 3rd and 4th River Warbler (Locustella fluviatilis) and Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala), 4th Lanceolated Warbler (Locustella lanceolata) and Greenish Warbler (Phylloscopus trochiloides), 4th and 5th Siberian Stonechat (Saxicola maura), and 5th Buff-breasted Sandpiper (Tryngites subruficollis) and Booted Eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus). The first Sabine's Gull (Larus sabini) for Wallonia also occurred in 1996. Also recorded were a Blue-winged Teal (Anas discors), a Red-rumped Swallow (Hirundo daurica), an Alpine Accentor (Prunella collaris) and a Collared Flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis), 2 American Wigeons (Mareca americana), 2 Ring-billed Gulls (Larus delawarensis), 2 Booted Warblers (Acrocephalus caligatus) and 2 Subalpine Warblers (Sylvia cantillans), as well as 3 Radde's Warblers (Phylloscopus schwarzi). A Paddyfield Warbler (Acrocephalus agricola) in December 1997 was also a remarkable record. An unprecedented influx of Pallas's Warbler (Phylloscopus proregulus) was noted in October-November 1996. The number of Great White Egrets (Casmerodius albus) continued to increase. Bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) bred for the first time ever in Flanders in 1996, and again in 1997. Two pairs of Cattle Egrets (Bubulcus ibis) also bred for the first time in 1996. Zitting Cisticola (Cisticola juncidis) attempted to breed for the first time since 1984. The breeding of Grey-headed Woodpecker (Picus canus) was confirmed for the first time in southernmost province of Luxembourg. The westernmost record of Grey-headed Woodpecker was also observed in the province of Hainaut in 1997. A pair of Woodchat Shrikes (Lanius senator) bred successfully in 1994-1997. As a result of its re-identification as a Booted Warbler s.l. (Acrocephalus caligatus / rama), the single Belgian record of Eastern Olivaceous Warbler (A. elaeicus) in 1990 was reviewed and this species was removed from the Belgian list.
