Article summary

Restricted to a few sites in the Haine valley and a few tens of pairs thirty years ago, the breeding population of Bluethroats developed itself in Wallonia during the years 1980-90. Bluethroat's range first extended to new sites in the Haine valley, then to other areas of western Hainaut, to the Schelde and Lys valleys and finally to disseminated site across the Sillon Sambre-et-Meuse, Hesbaye, Condroz and Brabant. Occupied sites remained in wetlands or waste lands. From 1995, nesting occurs regularly in ditches, sometimes without water, in an area of intensive cultures located between Hainaut and Flanders, indicating a widening of the spectrum of habitats occupied by Bluethroats that should provide new opportunities for range expansion in Wallonia.
