Article summary

We propose a standardised census method for Little Owls on a larger scale. Using this method, it is possible to track the evolution of the species through time in a quantitative way. Furthermore, the relationship between population desnsities and habitat features can be established and compared. The method uses a sequence of standardised songs during 78 seconds alternated with 60 seconds of silence. This sequence is repeated three times. Broadcasting is performed on 16 pre-defined locations in entities of 4 km2 according to the UTM grid. We illustrate the use of this method through the results of the Flemish Little Owl Project (1998-2000).
