Article summary

Collisions between planes and birds cause not only material damages, sometimes important and very costly, but also deadly accidents, sometimes with numerous victims. The prevention of such accidents lay on the management of the the airbase environment and infrastructure, in the aim of avoiding the presence of birds, and also on the identification of the risky areas and periods of time (concentration and date of passage of birds during migratory movements), and on the development of properly adapted instructions for the pilots. This is the job of the Bird Control Section, created in 2000 at the Belgian Air Force.
