Article summary

The White-nest Swiftlet eats exclusively flying insects. In Vietnam, Hymenoptera constitute more than 50 % of the adult's food. Their diet varies little during the course of the year, except from May to July, when termites become more numerous to the expense of Hymenoptera. Males tend to eat more Diptera and less Hymenoptera than females. Homoptera and Diptera constitute 71 % of the preys given to chicks. Differences between the diets of firstbrood and second-brood chicks are unimportant in the same locality, and differences observed between colonies reflect above all the local availability of prey. Single chicks are better fed than siblings, and accordingly grow better and have a lower mortality.
