Article summary

The diet of the little owl in eight stations in Algeria was studied by the analysis of 363 pellets, which made it possible to identify 6.827 preys belonging to 249 different species. The results show that the part of the insects is very high and largely dominating numerically (79.3 % to 97.6 %). the classes best represented are the coleoptera (7 times more than 25 %, twice more than 80), the hyménoptera (once 78.5 % and once 47.5 %), the dermaptera (61.1 and 70.6 %) and the orthoptera (once 32.9%). The small rodents are consumed, comparatively, only in very small number (1.1 to 6.7 %) but contribute to a significant degree to the biomass (63.3 %)
