Article summary

Recording and analysis of sonagrams of bird vocalizations have progressively revealed a picture of great complexity. We deal henceforth with a group of taxons that are vocally distinct, more or less distinguishable by morphology, particularly of the bill, and apparently showing no genetic differentiation. This paper tries to lay down the state of the question by replacing recent findings in the global context of our knowledge on crossbills and to provide perspectives for future research.
