In 2016-2017, the weather for the censuses of water birds was relatively cold in January but otherwise fairly mild. The low rainfall probably had some effects on the presence of particular species of wet meadows and mudflats, such as Snipe Gallinago gallinago. There were relatively low numbers of many species, including those of birds from nordic countries. The numbers of Pochards Aythya ferina, mergansers, Great Crested Grebes Podiceps cristatus and Snipe are among the lowest recorded in the last few decades. This year, there was again some overwintering – at least partial – of bitterns and of several species of heron recently recorded as breeding species (Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis, Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax, Little Egret Egretta garzetta).
