First sighting of a Red-flanked Bluetail Tarsiger cyanurus in Wallonia and first winter record for Belgium
On 5th January 2018, a first-winter Red-flanked Bluetail Tarsiger cyanurus was found in a small forest in Montzen, Liège Province, eastern Belgium. This is the eight Belgian record but the first in Wallonia, the first in winter and – as the bird remained until 7th February 2018 – the longest recorded stay of any in this country. This record has been accepted by the Belgian Rare Birds Committee. We describe and analyze this observation and the ten or so winter records of the species in Europe, in the light of the significant increase over recent decades of Siberian vagrant birds in Europe.
