The Venetian lagoon, one of the most important coastal wetland area on the Mediterranean Sea, is situated betwwen the Pô Delta and the Northern Adriatic lagoons of Morano and Grado. Crossed by numerous canals ans spread with mud islets and saltings, the lagoon covers more than 55.000 hectares. A great part of it, the so called "dead lagoon", where the tide has little or no action, is totally used for fishing and aquaculture. Despite game-hunting, not yet strietly controlled, and increasing problems of pollution, waterfowl is well represented. Duchs, gulls and waders find there an ideal roost during Autumn migration and wintering.
