In Belgium, until 1973, the Crossbill is a probably regular breeder, especially in the east of the country, with a maximum of pairs estimated to one hundred during favourable springs. In 1974, and especially in 1975, thousands of pairs breed in the southern part of the country. This article describes and analyses this phenomenon developing in a way never recorded in Belgium before.
