Article summary

In May 1981, a pair of Great Crested Grebe bred successfully in an open site located on the bank of a pond (one of the Etangs Mellaerts) in the Brussels urban area. The Grebes did almost not react to the many people passing by or coming as close as two or three meters from the nest. They displayed threatening postures, however, towards passing dogs or ducks or coots coming too close to the nest. The generally friendly attitude of the public certainly was a contributing factor in the success of the brood.
