Status of the Common Gull (Larus canus) in the Haine valley (Belgium).
The first breeding of the Common Gull in the Haine valley occured in 1970. The Pommeroeul (Bernissart), Baudour (Saint-Ghislain) and Obourg marshes. The first two one are large marshes which are the result of ground sinking caused by mining activity. The third onr consists of marl-pits still in operation and this is where the largest of the three colonies is located. The article describes the sites, the history of this Common Gull population, and gives some information concerning the periods of occupation, the behavior of the birds, their nests and eggs.
