Enumeration and evolution of the populationof Little Grebes (Tachybaptus ruficollis) nesting in Brabant.
In 1980-1981, rather more than thirty pairs of Little Grebes nested in Brabant, mainly in the River Dyle drainage-basin. Nearly, all bred on shallow ponds, often poor in aquatic vegetatio. Most of the stretches of water only accommodated a single pair of nesting birds. For the last fifty years, the distribution of this grebe extended slightly, thanks to the creation of numerous ponds, many of which, however, are not very favourable. The population probably diminished during the sixties before subsequent recovery, except in the Brussels region (disturbance, deterioration of sites).
