Wintering of Lttle Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) in Wallonia.
During the winters 1981-82 and 1982-83, the Little Grebe was specifically observed almost every week along + or - 20 Km section of the lower Ourthe, directly up-river of its confluence with the Meuse. In addition to the migratory period and the winter variations of the numbers involved ( a maximum of 40 specimens observed), the observation defined to a certain extent the ethology and the ecological requirements of the species during winter, stressing especially the importance of the riverine vegetation and that of the islands. Moreover, observations carried out in January 1983 on various waterways in Wallonia (56 different sections totalling 85 Km), enabled the number of Little Grebes present at that moment to be estimated at around 500.
