Article summary

During the autumn of 1986, an invasion of Jays was followed at Verviers during two-hour morning counts (and a few whole mornings). This invasion took place from Sept. 22 tp Oct. 3 and the total number involved at this point was estimated at 900-1000 specimens. Two waves could be distinguished, culminating on Sept. 25 and Oct. 1; the first was directed towards the NNE (!), the second towards the south. The observations were carried out in a predominantly forest region and certain differences were revealed in comparison with the particulars obtained in an agricultural zone in 1983 by VAN GOMPEL (1985) : peak daily passage and fall in migratory intensity earlier in the morning, larger groups of birds involved, especially on days of important passage.
