Nesting of Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) in belgian Lorraine and bordering.
In 1986 and 1987, Wheatears were found on the slag-heaps of the old iron works at Athus, in the extreme south of Belgium. This small population, limited to 3 or 4 pairs, is part of a Franco-Luxemburg nucleus linked principally with Lorraine iron works and estimated at a minimum of 50 pairs. The sites occupied are very similar to those of the Hainaut mining waste-heaps which, at the present time, harbour the only other regular population of the Walloon country.
