Article summary

Field indentification of the four large species of Gulls common in Belgium (Larus argentatus, L. cachinnans, L. fuscus and L. marinus) is treated in the form of comparisons of plumages taken two by two. For adults and first year immatures; all the criteria which can be used in the field are discussed in detail. They are presented so as to be compatible with rapid observation, or observation at a distance. The differences as far as the other plumages are concerned (juvenile, first summer, second winter, second summer, sub-adult) are given in detail.
