Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) breeding in Wallonia and Brabant : report on increase in 1987.
Walravens, M., Fouarge, J.-P. & Jacob, J.-P.
A nesting species in Belgium since the beginning of the century, the Great Crested Grebe continues its expansion in Wallonia and in Brabant (Fig; 1) where its populations were counted in 1987 : at least 224 pairs nested and 615 adults were present by mid-May, an increase of 61 % and 58 % since 1981 (Table 1, Fig. 4). The evolution of the population is analysed in terms of annual growth (Table 2) and in function of regional differences. The various types of water bodies occupied and their economic exploitation are noted (Tables 3 and 4), as are some data concering the biology of the species gathered during the census.

Distribution of the Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) in the Aisne rive basin (Luxembourg province). From 29th February to 5th April 1988, a census was made of Dipper of the Aisne river basin (Fig. 1), on a length of 68 kilometers. A total of 40 territories was recorded for the whole of the study area : 23 on the Aisne (36 Km) and 1§ on its tributaries (32 Km) (Fig. 3). Factors likely to influence the distribution of the Dipper are discussed in relation with the slope of the river (Fig. 2), the acidity of the water and the spruce plantations in the upstream part of the Aisne. The correlation pH to the presence of Dippers is positive in view of the increase of the density of the Dipper from upstream to downstream, and the increase in pH from 3,8 to 6,9 from the source to the confluence with the ourthe. As ORMEROD & Tyler (1987) indicate, the Dipper is an excellent indicator of the acidity of a water course, given, of course, a favorable habitat.
