Observations on breeding Nutcrackers(Nucifraga caryocatactes).
Sorbi, S., Robbrecht, G., Steeman, C. & Wille, E.
The nesting in Belgium of the Nutcracker has been confirmed since 1975. Yet, notes on the breeding behaviour of Belgian birds have not been published. Since 1983, some nests were discovered and followed during the breeding season. In 1989, a nest was watched on a weekly basis which has resulted in precise data on the behaviour of the species and the development of the young. These observations are described. Data gathered here are compared to previous data.

Distribution of the Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) in the Aisne rive basin (Luxembourg province). From 29th February to 5th April 1988, a census was made of Dipper of the Aisne river basin (Fig. 1), on a length of 68 kilometers. A total of 40 territories was recorded for the whole of the study area : 23 on the Aisne (36 Km) and 1§ on its tributaries (32 Km) (Fig. 3). Factors likely to influence the distribution of the Dipper are discussed in relation with the slope of the river (Fig. 2), the acidity of the water and the spruce plantations in the upstream part of the Aisne. The correlation pH to the presence of Dippers is positive in view of the increase of the density of the Dipper from upstream to downstream, and the increase in pH from 3,8 to 6,9 from the source to the confluence with the ourthe. As ORMEROD & Tyler (1987) indicate, the Dipper is an excellent indicator of the acidity of a water course, given, of course, a favorable habitat.
