Status of the Corncrake (Crex crex) in Fagne and Famenne.
Thanks to a sysmetatic carried out in Fagne from 1983 to 1989 and in Famenne from 1985 to 1989, it is now possible to state the regular presence of the Corncrake in the combined area (an annual average of above 12) with fluctuations according to year and place. The lack of fidelity to nesting sites (24.7 to 34.2 % according to calculations) can be correlated to the precariousness of likely suitable sites; The study of the status takes into account a body of data of some years ago, not found in ornithogical literature, and shows a probable increase in numbers since 1979. This has to do with particular circumstances in the history of present-day agriculture, namely the agony of certain farms just before their restructuring into more efficient units. This increase also shows the astonishing faculty of adaptation of the Corncake and leaves us some optimism as regards its long-term survival, in spite of the gradual disappearance of sites presently occupied.
