Population trends of the Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio) near Virton (Belgian Lorraine).
Van Nieuwenhuyse, D.
Between 1979 and 1992 a study was carried out concerning the Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio) in the South of Gaume (Belgium). In spite of the global Western European decline, a stable population was observed and even increased considerably over the last few years. The breeding couples of the Red-backed Shrike tend to congregate. The species occupies the same territories with a high fidelity. Further investigation will have to decide if the increase over the last years is due to natural population-fluctuations or an actual rise in numbers.
