Continuing decrease of the House Martin (Delichon urbica) populations in Brussels.
Couvreur, J.-M. & Jacob, J.-P.
Populations of the House Martin in Brussels decreased by 80% between 1982 and 1995. This decrease seems to be more marked than in other regions of Belgium. As possible causes, shortage of sufficient mud material available for the nest construction and direct destruction by people undoubtly play a major role. On the other hand, the decrease cannot be explained by a shortage of food species (mostly Aphids) for these are well known to be resistant to moderate air pollution.
