Article summary

The avifauna of clearings resulting from fallen trees was studied, both by quadrat (results in Table 1) and transect (Table 2), in Brussels sector of the forest of Soignes. The bird population of the only large clearing (16 ha) is diverse and densities quite high (Table 1). It is characteristic of areas recently established, still sparsely covered by vegetation. Its composition is one that has certainly become rare in the region of Brussels : present are severeal species now very scarce, such as Woodcock, Stonechat, Tree Pipit and Yellow Bunting, as well as many Willow Warblers and Common Whitethroats. A Hobby hunted there in 1996. This avifauna calls to mind those that were present in several semi-natural sites in the Brussels region some 10-30 years ago.
