Article summary

Winchats were already decreasing in Belgium in the sixties but were still common in most of southern Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse (Fagne and Ardenne). In the seventies, the negative trend was continuing and probably no more than 25-30 pairs were still present. Since then, Winchat have become irregular in Fagne. In 1997-1998, a survey found only 5-7 pairs on four locations in the extreme south of the Ardenne part. Unless immediate conservation measures are taken, their complete demise is likely in the short term.
